“Eye fatigue” and “dry eyes” are concerns we hear every day.  Let’s talk a little about how to manage these common issues.

1.Eye irritation is usually caused by the overpopulation of bacteria or mites at the base of our eyelashes.  Tiny mites, called Demodex that commonly live in the hair follicles on our face, usually don’t pose a problem.  However, they can proliferate and cause irritation, redness, stinging, and itching.  Other signs of microorganisms causing problems are white bumps (clogged oil glands), styes and infections, loss of or misdirected lashes, and vision changes.  Eyelid cleansing products like Ocusoft products used regularly can alleviate symptoms.

2.Screen time is affecting our blinking.  Blinking our eyes is a natural involuntary action which nourishes the cornea with complex lubricants, removing debris and creating an even surface for clear vision.  An adequate tear film can only be maintained with an adequate blink rate.  Our natural blink rate (20 blinks/minute) drops by 60-70% with screens.  Inflammatory dry eye disease can result.  We recommend taking blink breaks often during screentime with a “20/20 rule”.  Every 20 minutes, look away and blink 20 times.

3.Makeup and skin care products can migrate onto the corneal surface and also clog the delicate oil glands.  If you wear eye makeup or lash extensions, clean your lids well everyday.

Symptoms of eye irritation and dry eyes can be prevented or addressed with regular lid hygiene and more conscious blinking.  Simple steps can be taken to maintain healthier and more comfortable eyes and vision!
